I have previously spoken of the affection my family has for Volvo with fond memories of riding around Boston in a blue 240 DL, of my uncle also driving around Boston in a brown 244 DL, and of my mother later buying a 960. The new S60 is not the Volvo of old. The S60 Inscription model is built in China by parent company, Geely, for China’s car market where owners expect to be driven and as such, an extended wheelbase is the standard du jour. The quality of this Volvo is one of the best I have experienced with premium touches like real wood inlays. There are several standard and available safety and technology features including front and rear park assist, city safety collision avoidance technology, driver alert control-road sign information-active high beam technology, and much more. I drove the front-wheel drive, turbocharged S60 with the Platinum trim which adds a Harmon Kardon premium sound system and a technology package with features like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, driver alert control, and collision warning with full auto brake. I was able to check out Volvo’s Sensus Connect telematics system and use in-car apps like Yelp and Wikipedia to find food and places, search for fuel and so much more. The S60 T5 Inscription FWD is very fuel-efficient with an EPA rating of 37 mpg on the highway from a 2.0L turbo engine that makes 240 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Quite simply, I’m impressed.
